Understand the exchange
Affiliate marketing is a referral arrangement: a business may pay a commission when someone takes a qualifying action through your tracked link. The terms, eligible actions and timing depend on the program. A click does not necessarily result in a commission.
Your job as a publisher is to help the reader decide. Start with their needs, explain the relevant trade-offs and avoid presenting the highest-paying offer as automatically the best choice.
Make the recommendation useful
Describe who the product fits, which problem it addresses, what you have actually checked and what remains uncertain. If you have not personally used a tool, say so. Separate firsthand testing from information gathered from the provider.
- Explain the use case before listing features.
- Check important claims against current official information.
- Include limitations and suitable alternatives.
- Explain recurring costs and practical setup requirements where relevant.
- Keep time-sensitive details dated and review them periodically.
Make commercial relationships clear
Tell readers when a link is an affiliate link close to the recommendation, in plain language. Do not hide the explanation in an unrelated page. Check the program’s requirements and the disclosure rules that apply to your audience and location.
A recommendation should still be useful to the reader if the affiliate link disappears.
A disclosure does not turn a weak recommendation into a strong one. The underlying comparison must be accurate and fair.
Measure the right things
Track which content helps readers take relevant next steps. Compare qualified clicks, confirmed conversions and net revenue with the time and cost of producing the content. Avoid treating a dashboard screenshot or one successful period as a promise of future results.
Choose one reader problem and outline an honest comparison. Include who each option suits, its limitations and how you checked your claims.
